The oldest thing I’m wearing today is a ring that was my grandma’s. It’s our birthstone.
My grandma used to sell Sarah Coventry Jewelry. She had a huge collection of costume jewelry and kept most of it in a big jewelry box. She could spend hours showing us all of her jewelry. I have an allergy to metal and could never wear anything but gold jewelry, so I thought. She was so sad about that. I never really cared because I was used to not wearing it.
When she passed in 2007, everyone went through grandma’s jewelry and took what they wanted. There were still a lot of rings and things left over that no one wanted. So, my mom asked me if I would like to take what was left and the jewelry box. I did.
I went through the jewelry knowing I couldn’t wear any of it, but it still gave joy to look through everything. The one day I just decided to put a ring on. It was stainless steel. I found out I am not allergic to it. I found the pink ring and started wearing during October, in remembrance of my grandma.
For My last birthday I put the ring on and haven’t taken it off. I know that she would be happy to know that I can wear some jewelry and that I am wearing something of hers.
